Nurocor Clinical Platform Digitalization and Large Language Models – The Best of Both Worlds

Large Language Models (LLMs) are taking the world by storm, seemingly able to produce relevant output for any topic. However, without the right content (context in LLM terms), an LLM prompt is unlikely to produce high-quality results. Through study digitalization, the Nurocor Clinical Platform (NCP) brings study-specific context to the power of LLMs.

Nurocor has been an active participant in TransCelerate’s Digital Data Flow (DDF) initiative since its inception in 2019 and is a recognized leader in clinical trial design digitalization. The Nurocor Clinical Platform’s robust study design data model captures fine-grained detail about all aspects of a study design, including arm design (the trial schematic), eligibility criteria, objectives and endpoints, interventions, the schedule of activities and much more. The Nurocor Clinical Platform then uses this data for Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) within its LLM implementation. By using this RAG approach, the Nurocor Clinical Platform is able to augment the impressive powers of an LLM with precise well-defined data points about the specific design under consideration. In addition, the Nurocor Clinical Platform’s framework-based LLM integration also allows customers to bring their own LLM to the table to combine with Nurocor Clinical Platform’s RAG capabilities. (See https://medium.com/@anirudhsyal/rag-vs-llm-understanding-the-difference-and-synergyintroduction-the-magic-of-retrieval-augmented-3e4bd33f2465 for a brief overview of the complementary nature of LLMs and RAG techniques.)

RAG-based retrieval opens the door for Nurocor Clinical Platform users to truly take advantage of LLM integration. Both historical trial designs as well as studies under active design can be populated into Nurocor Clinical Platform’s RAG database, enabling both “what if” analysis (e.g., what design approaches have historically produced successful trial results for a specific therapeutic area and indication) as well as rapid generation of study documents such as the protocol itself, informed consent forms, the statistical analysis plan and many others. Nurocor Clinical Platform’s Authoring application provides an ideal home for such document generation.

LLM technology continues to advance rapidly, providing significant benefits to the pharmaceutical industry. Nurocor is keeping pace with these advancements, remaining at the forefront of modern trial design by giving its customers the best of both worlds.
