Embracing ICH M11: The Future of Digitalized Clinical Study Designs
The ICH M11 guideline represents a transformative shift towards digitalization and standardization of clinical study protocols. The potential advantages for regulatory bodies, pharmaceutical companies, patients and public health organizations are mind-boggling. However, like any major change, it also brings new anxieties, particularly among those who create these crucial documents today.
I recently attended a webinar featuring experts from Vulcan HL7 FHIR, CDISC, FDA, EMA, and industry. Here are my reflections on the tremendous value ICH M11 brings to the often-overlooked protocol writers and other contributors.
Personalized Views on Protocol Design – A Glimpse into the Future:
ICH M11 ushers in a new era of flexibility and precision in protocol review. The shift to a structured data-driven approach enables highly customized views, and not only for regulatory reviewers. It’s a game changer. As a lead author of a protocol, I can now tailor with unprecedented specificity, input from each contributor based on their expertise and the specific needs of the study.
Simplifying Clinical Trial Submissions in the EU/EEA:
Clinical trial submissions in the EU/EEA is about to get a lot simpler! ICH M11 is aligned with the EU Clinical Trials Regulation (536/2014), streamlining the submission process across approximately 30 countries. The result? More accurate, complete, and timely data submission. I will access open CTIS analytical platforms to interrogate these data to craft more precise and effective trial designs. This streamlining is set to make the process of protocol creation more efficient than ever.
Advancing Global Health Interoperability with Vulcan UDP:
The Vulcan UDP project is pioneering the integration of ICH M11 with CDISC models and HL7 FHIR to speed up healthcare data exchange. Currently, Vulcan UDP is planning connectathons on structured title pages and eligibility criteria, with plans to expand to objectives, endpoints, and schedule of activities by 2025. This effort promises greater standardization, marking a significant advancement in structured protocol authoring.
Automating clinical content reuse:
ICH M11 also facilitates the automation of downstream content reuse. No more copy and paste, copy and paste, copy and paste. This automation allows writers and reviewers to focus on areas where they create the most value and minimizes the risks of message distortion and inconsistency from iterative reviews during the development program.
Looking Ahead
Nurocor is at the forefront of implementing ICH M11, leveraging its advanced technology to use study definitions to drive digital dataflow and study designs. By embracing these changes, we can expect a more efficient, consistent, and data-driven approach to clinical research. As we move forward, the adoption of ICH M11 holds the promise of unlocking new possibilities and improving outcomes across the clinical research landscape.
